Digital Copywriting: Toyland Recording Studio – A Word on Microphone Choice

Toyland Recording Studio pencil microphones.

One of the questions we often get asked in initial creative consultations with artists, is this – “What microphone would you use for…?”
The answer to that question goes beyond simply identifying the instrument or voice type. Microphone usage is part science, and part art. To select the right mic for the job, we have to consider the unique qualities of the sound source – every drum kit, amp, and singer is different, with a distinctive timbre and personality. The right mic will enhance the uniqueness and appeal of the sound. We also consider genre conventions, sonic aesthetics, and creative applications of polar patterns, proximity effect, directional placement, and room sound. Microphone use is an aspect of studiocraft where there is no substitute for experience, and of course having a diverse kit of excellent microphones on hand to choose from. At Toyland, we have you covered!
